Culture HistoryI lived and studied at Trinity College Cambridge. I have returned numerous times since 1974. The Colleges at Cambridge are still steeped in history art culture architecture. Some of the businesses and formality of Cambridge has changed - where once stood centuries old traditional English Tailor shops - now holds Burger King. The Turks Head an historic English Pub across from Angles Court is now a fast food franchises. Business have changed but the town square is the same on Saturday market as it has been since first I went to Cambridge. The diggs above Great Gate at Trinity College where Isaac Newton once resided still close at the same hour. Butlers still announce your arrival. I am now permitted to \walk on the grass\ in the Great Court of Trinity. King's College Chapel a massive Gothic Cathederal still holds Reubens Adoration of the Magi. Punters still glide quietly down the picturesque River Cam. Students dress differently now wearing jeans and sweatshirts but Cambridge maintains a sense of history that one can only find at Cambridge - unique. Near Cambridge is the American Cemetary where thousands of young Americans lay buried under rows of white crosses and monuments on the emerald rolling green hills. The majestic white marble walls etched with the names of fallen warriors mirrored in stair stepped reflectting pools - between the panels of names dark red roses climb creating a peaceful tranquality unlike anywhere else in the world. I remember going there to think before final oral examinations - to watch the sun rise over the crosses standing in long lines waatching the silent grey fog creep through the lines of white monuments. Cambridge Oxford Strattford-upon-Avon and Alfriston and Seaford on the south coast of Britan with its white cliffs rising like sentinels from the choppy channel sea are places for anyone and everyone. Our history was made there!
