In 1847, Fort Pulaski was considered a state-of-the-art defense system, though it fell easily to Union troops during the Civil War. The fort has been well preserved, and visitors may roam through its protective brick walls. A video presentation, exhibits offer a historical visual while park rangers share details on the history of the monument and its role in history. The monument consists of 5,623 acres including nature trails, picnic areas and spectacular views of the salt marshes.
