BrazilI was a missionary medical clinic hospital and uhunger relief project administrator in Brazil for 11 years (1983-1994). The northestern part of Brazil is well known for chronic undernutrition and profound poverty for many of its people. Like most larger cities in Brazil many of the poorest people from rural areas come into the cities to find a better life for their children. Often they live in slums. There are also nice hotels and interesting historical sites. On the beautiful white sand beaches there are artisans selling ornate carvings sand paintings in glass bottles some of the best hammocks in the world as well as souvenirs. Most Brazilians love music and dancing and the beaches are more for social get togethers than swimming. The beaches in the city are poluted and most Brazilian nationals do not swim there. There are lobster boats and daily fishing that bring seafoods back to market daily during the lobster season. There is a very nice water park about 20 miles east of the city on the beach in an area where local mansions have septic tanks the restaurants are safe and the beautiful white beaches are raked and maintained. Drink from a chilled coconut. Ttry the national soft drink Guarana. Eat fresh tropical fruits. Swim in the ocean. Play on the beaches. Take an inexpensiive camera. In the city as well as in public places do not expect most to speak English (outside of the hotel areas or the water park. ) Hire a guide to translate for you and to help keep you out of trouble. Unless going by formal invitation to a very special event dress casually. On beaches plan to wear shorts sandals & a light cotton top over swimwear. Show respect kindness and a pleasant attitude to all. Your smiles and nodding approval will be appreciated. Overpay a bit. Avoid the north-american OK hand gesture (It is vulgar in this culture). Instead of the OK gesture use a thumb up. See sugarcane fields & distilleries making ethanol for fuel.
