Most Grand Canyon hotels are located near the south rim of the park. Hotels not inside the park itself are scattered along Highway 64 in the small town of Tuscayan. The pet-friendly Red Feather Lodge is there, along with the newest hotel in the area, the Grand Hotel. These family-oriented hotels are only two miles from the park's entrance and provide easy access to popular attractions such as the Apache Stables and the IMAX theatre.
Grand Canyon hotels inside the park are a mix of rustic and contemporary. The historic El Tovar Hotel built in 1905 but since updated�is the canyon's most upscale hotel and the only one that offers room service and nightly turndown. If you're lucky, you just might get to stay in a room formerly occupied by Theodore Roosevelt or Albert Einstein.
The Bright Angel Lodge is just a few feet from the Canyon rim and is the check-in point for the world famous Grand Canyon Mule Rides. A bit more rustic than the El Tovar, it's a Registered National Historic Landmark. For more contemporary tastes, the Kachina Lodge is right next door and is well-suited for families.
The Phantom Ranch, located at the bottom of the Canyon, is definitely for adventure seekers. It's the only lodging facility below the Canyon rim and the only way to get there is by foot, by mule, or by rafting the Colorado River.
To avoid the busy tourist atmosphere of Grand Canyon hotels in the south rim area, consider the Grand Canyon Lodge on the north rim. It sits right on the rim and offers four types of cabins. Some are more rustic than others, but all have private bathrooms.
