Undoubtedly the largest and most important religious monument in Arequipa, this structure covers about 20,000 square meters. It was established in 1579 under Saint Catherine of Sienna's advocacy, however, the construction took decades. Once completed, it was nearly its own small town inside Arequipa, and was used to house 450 nuns secluded for life. Its area includes three cloisters and six streets named after Spanish cities, which show different architectural styles as well. The convent was opened as a museum in 1970, and includes as one of its attractions, the cell of Sister Ana of the Angels who allegedly had prophetic visions. Admission applies.
