Born in Heidelberg 
Lived In Heidelberg for 20 years. Still miss it. To me there is no other place like it.
Even for tourists it's a great place to visit. Try the trip by boat up the Neckar river, beautiful.
Small towns are well worth visiting, most natives speak some english, you'll enjoy their "Gemuetlichkeit".
