I was just in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City last December. I much preferred Hanoi but HCMC was nice too. What the other reviewer said is true, the Vietnamese people are surprisingly friendly. We seemed to make friends everywhere we went though I find most people are nice no matter where in the world I go. Food is a top priority for me and it seems to be a country where you just cannot have a bad meal. That will probably change as the country becomes more westernized, so go soon. Just one word of warning: motorbikes! They are everywhere and they are treacherous. Think that as a pedestrian you've got the right-of-way? Think again. They'll run you over and keep going. As an independent traveler who walks most everywhere it really was overwhelming and exhausting dodging the motorbikes all day, every day. Another annoyance is the street vendors trying to sell you everything from gum to books. Still, it's an interesting city in a beautiful country.
