Normally, my wife and I don't linger in the major cities of places we visit. As is sometimes said, the best thing about Auckland is that it is only about 20 km from New Zealand. In the case of Hobart, Tasmania is even closer, maybe 5 km. We found Hobart to be a delightful place, with friendly people, excellent restaurants and bars, and decent hotels at a fair tariff. As is our practice we got out of the City quickly, but were struck that we didn't feel like we were escaping. Tasmania truly should be seen before any more "civilization" gets there. Whether we goes to the shoreside south of Hobart and Bruny Island, up the east coast to Freycinet N.P., or west to the wilds in the vicinity of Strahan, it is strikingly beautiful. The only downside is in the mining sector between Hobart and Strahan, but even that is good to see if only to appreciate how easy it is to screw up our environment if we aren't careful.
