Wonderful, beautiful place. Homer itself is a cool little town, but to really experience the essence of the place, hop on a ferry boat, and check out one of the lodges or campgrounds (cabins and yurts available for rent) in the area. Kayak on Grewingk Lake, one of three lakes in the world where you can kayak up to the face of a glacier, sea kayak on the bay and observer the wildlife (we saw two bald eagles fight - locking talons and wrestling - over a salmon on a beach), or take a hike up to an ... Kayak on Grewingk Lake, one of three lakes in the world where you can kayak up to the face of a glacier, sea kayak on the bay and observer the wildlife (we saw two bald eagles fight - locking talons and wrestling - over a salmon on a beach), or take a hike up to an alpine peak with amazing views. Or, you can just relax and take it all in. I would highly recommend checking out Hideaway Cove Wilderness Lodge on Kachemak Bay, in Halibut Cove. It is family owned by some wonderful people, who make sure your stay is both adventurous and comfortable. We stayed four nights, in a cabin right over the bay, with great views and wildlife viewing. Great food, great accomodations, great adventure....what more could one ask for? And, considering prices in Alaska, very reasonable prices. Check it out, you won't regret it! (Forgot to mention....the community of Halibut Cove is probably the only place in the world where you can buy a coffee/espresso/latte from a floating coffee shop in the entire world.

Homer is the best place in the whole world for some folks. It is for me. It is artsy and edgy and completely different from everywhere else. If you like California but less people more artistic types fishermen mountains and being a little earthy this is the place for you. Camp on the spit or at the Homestead. Go to the shops pick up some amazing art. Wash your stuff at the laundrymat net to all the kids working on the big cannery boats. They might have some clothes on likely no shoes and maybe they will have bathed by then but they will have great stories and really crave conversation. Go to the public library and pay for a day pass and send some emails. Then pick up some Jelly from the Alaskan Berry Company... your Mom and aunts will love you for it! the Timbleberry and the Fireweed Jam and Jelly is the very best! Watch out for moose on the road remember to pack rain gear... this is Alaska no one slows down or doesn't go just cause it might rain for a little bit! Don't forget to go down by the marina to look out for seaotters and eagles.
