Head north into North Carolina and there are several barrier islands that offer a much quieter and closer alternative to Myrtle Beach. Head north into North Carolina and there are several barrier islands that offer a much quieter and closer alternative to Myrtle Beach. Our favorite is Holden Beach which has no high rise hotels and consists primarily of single-family residences and duplexes. Some are private vacation homes or permanent residences while a number of wonderful homes and cottages are rentals. Even those not right on the ocean are typically an easy walk to beach accesses. The island is bordered by the Atlantic on the east and the intracoastal waterway on the west. Many homes have views of both. The beach is beautiful and well maintained by the Town of Holden Beach. There are a variety of rental companies that serve interested vacationers. The number of public parking areas (for day-trippers) are limited the largest of which is right under the bridge onto the island. There are weekend-long festivals in the spring (late April) and fall (late October). There are numerous wonderful golf courses in the vicinity. For those who crave more \action\ Holden Beach is situated about half-way between Wilmington NC and Myrtle Beach SC with either being less than an hour's drive away. Each also has an international airport making it easy to get to Holden Beach from either location.

We live about 10 minutes from IOP. We go all the time. Traffic is not bad unless you try to go on 4th of July. The beaches have life guards in some places and other places are very quiet and private. Resturants are relaxed and full of live bands and just a great place to hang out. We love our Isle of Palms... More

I lived just across the IOP connector for 12 years. During that time I watched IOP go from a quaint area to a nightmare. IOP is in no way as commercialized as Myrtle Beach but it isn't very big either. The public beach is only a few blocks long and thus overcrowded and now very dirty. Though there are places in the residential area that are less populated but you must find a decent place to park and then hike to a public access trail so travel light. The traffic on and off IOP is horrible. Next door to IOP is Sullivan's Island. Sullivan's beach is much nicer but there is no where to park. A better bet for a vacationer would be Fripp or Hunting Islands both remain unspoiled and located just south of Charleston above Hilton Head. Lots of room beaches are clean virtually no traffic and plenty of convenient parking. The surfing is much better too especially on Fripp Island.

What a waste of time @IOP. No shopping centers outlet malls and dining cost is outrageous. So go ahead enjoy your vacation on IOP and waste your time and $. Come back home thinking if you had a vacation.... More
