Istanbul is such an addictive city full of historically relevant sights. Within Istanbul you may find visiting the Hippodrome, Blue Mosque, Saint Sophia, Toppakapi and Dolmabache Palaces of particular assistance. Although, within Istanbul much of these sights can be walked to but it helps to have the servıces of an experıenced tour company to help with arranging tıckets, inter-city travel and buses and airplane reservations. Sometimes getting to the bus station of from the station to the tourist attraction requires pick and *drop* services and I foundi it best to rely on a touring company that can orchestrate all this, I recommend companies that moderately prıce good service and deliver. The one I had a chance to work with was One Nation travel agency. using the websites http://www.allistanbultours.com Happy travels!!!

I went to Istanbul and to Izmir in January of this year, staying a week at each location. I highly recommend the Richmond-Taksim for their service, wonderful food and location. Everything is within walking distance or within range via taxi-cab, bus or dolmus. The food in both locations was outstanding and very reasonable. Avoid the 5 Star Hotel restaurants if you are budget minded. The food from street vendors is very inexpensive and safe to eat. I was downwind from having had a triple byp... More

Everything is within walking distance or within range via taxi-cab, bus or dolmus. The food in both locations was outstanding and very reasonable. Avoid the 5 Star Hotel restaurants if you are budget minded. The food from street vendors is very inexpensive and safe to eat. I was downwind from having had a triple bypass and Istanbul was very well tolerated. Wear comfortable walking shoes and, in January, take an umbrella. I only needed mine once. A trip on the Boshporos via ferry to the Black Sea is essential as well.
I am a big fan of Turkey having lived there for 18 months in the early sixties. Wonderful country and wonderful people. Shop ahead for hotel deals. There are many excellent deals on hotels, non-American, that are conveniently located.

I spent 3 days and 4 nights in Istanbul. I found the experience to be very expensive for what I got. Tour didn't go where it was supposed to "because of the weather" - but it was supposed to go to the Grand Bazzar which is inside!

Note that most if not all tourist attractions e.g. Hagia Sofia are closed on MONDAYS.

Food was priced equivalent to US prices boutique hotel I stayed at would have been an embarassment to Motel 6. Prices were higher than Amman Jordan for room food taxis events. One item that was particularly bad was the International Hotel. It may be a 5 star but $50 per drink (Jack Daniels and Coke) at the bar?

I've recommened against Istanbul.

I was in Turkey for 8 nights September 2008 and wish I could have extended my trip longer. As a single traveler I never felt not safe. The people were super kind and at night the city is pretty quiet. If you can only do a few things treat yourself to a Turkish Bath (one of the nicer ones preferably) see Hagia Sophia and spend some time exploring. Try to get to Cappadoccia if you can get a chance. Worth the extra miles of travel. Most unique landscape I have ever seen and filled with history.
