I was in Kabul in the spring of 03. The city and outlying areas are still very much war torn. Destruction is everywhere and frequent bombings are a common occurence along with the occasional rocket attack. I was in Kabul in the spring of 03. The city and outlying areas are still very much war torn. Destruction is everywhere and frequent bombings are a common occurence along with the occasional rocket attack. What appealed to me the most was the local peoples ability to deal with what had happened in the past and what was presently going on. Kids still played adults still went to work and to the market. I had the opportunity during my 4 months there to meet many locals and learn much about the afghanistan people. Up in the mountains they at one point grew grapes for wine making. Unfortunately the number one cash crop is the poppy plant which is for the production of heroin. Take the good with the bad. Mine fields are everywhere and there are many countries there supporting the demining efforts. I myself being an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician there as a U.S. Government civilian was drawn to these folks to learn more about what was being found still today years after the Russians left. Within the city limits while danger was everywhere people still went about their business as if it was any town here. I use to go down to \chicken street\ to shop. It was told to me that this street was once where many chicken farms were hence its name. Many of the foreigners that were in Kabul came there to purchase about anything you could want. Once out of the vehicle I was always encircled by the local kids who became my \bodyguards\ and my package carriers. They knew as an American while armed I was constantly observing for anyone who would pose a threat to me or my group. They were always looking out for us. Of course we gave them a monetary thank you each time and I got to know many of the kids and shop keepers. Resturants were many and the food was always good no matter what I ate and many times I didn't know what I was eating. Not a vacation spot but I did enjoy my experience.
