This square in the center of the Hanover City is often refered to as the heart of the town. The square takes its name from an old Café, named Kröpcke, which was founded in the year 1797 by the baker Johann Robby. Today a modern Mövenpick Café marks the spot where the Café Kröpcke once stood. Even then, Kröpcke was a congestion point, with the difference that today, with the construction of the U-Bahn (metro) subterranean passages have somewhat alleviated the traffic problems. The metro leads to all areas of the city. On the ground floor, street sellers and artists show their attractions, people meet in private or - in case of New Year's Eve or a won championship - for spontaneous celebrations in the street.
