Lima is just like any large city... and one night is enough! The Gold Museum is amazing, but the city is a stepping stone to truely life-changing destinations such as the Cusco region (Cusco city, ************ And the Sacred Valley) and The Amazon Jungle. Don´t miss out on Peru, whatever you do and for goodness sakes, don´t waste your time in Lima! The real Peru is just an hour´s plane ride in any direction!... More

Lima center is a very charming and authentic colonial place characterized by an eclectic architecture. As in all the capitals of the world with a huge cultural legacy Lima has wonderful museums. The Larco Museum for example is one of the best museums in the world and I have actually seen quite a lot. It displays an important collection of pre-Columbian art including a much appreciated erotic gallery depicting in a very realistic way their sexual habits...You will be curiously intrigued by being surrounded by giant phalluses and ceramic couples having sex in all kind of positions. The main galleries of the museum showcase the most consequent collection of gold silver and jewelry of the Ancient Peru. The Larco Museum is one of the few museums in the world allowing tourists in the storage area. In total the collection of more than 45.000 pieces will leave you the sensation of having learnt a lot about pre-Columbian civilizations. Lima is also the only city where Pre-Columbian pyramids coexist with modern buildings. Lima is diverse and full of opportunities of different places each one of them having its own particular charm each one of them providing its own particular atmosphere. There are two constants though…food and music. There you will eat like nowhere in the world. I really liked the Plaza de Armas where the city of Lima was founded and the Independence declared. There you will be able to see the three main buildings: the Archbishop’s Palace the Government Palace and the Cathedral in the middle of which stands a lovely fountain. When you travel South America this is the kind of place you would expect you are suddenly right in the middle of a wide square surrounded by colors and sounds that reflect the buzz of a Latino City. I enjoyed just walking around it and paying attention to how the colors of the buildings blend together. I always am quite impressed when I am there because the place has a particularly vivid and vibrant atmosphere.

THE RICH ARE STUCK UPWell I visited Lima last year as I was invited by a friend. She lives in Monterico. She has a beautiful house with pool and 2 maids and her son goes to private school where she pays $700/month. I went everywhere with her. Her circle of friends where the rich ones and always talking about frivolous stuff. You can see all talking while their maids are taking care of their children. Her circle of friends where the rich ones and always talking about frivolous stuff. You can see all talking while their maids are taking care of their children. They liked me only because I am white but they are very stuck up. First of all you don't see african americans where the rich lives. They live in the poor cities. The transit is very bad but the taxists are good drivers and they never get into an accident. The food is great the rich cities are great and I didn't see any crime there. Nightlife is great in Lima too. My friend is a nice person but I will not visit again. I don't like the rich peruvian people they are full of...

They are always please because their wonderful and beautiful people whose culture will sweep you off your feet who just always want to please you and take care of you. This city's people come in all shapes and colors you can see Black Chinese and White people all speaking Spanish and if you are kind enough they will try and speak English to you.

I have been in Peru many times and I can say yes it is a hidden gem. If you go North of Lima you can visit Trujillo Lambayeque and Piura especially during summer and spring because you can enjoy beaches and surroundings and I’ve noticed that their gastronomical dishes at north are different than those in Lima especially Ceviche. If you go to Iquitos (Amazon) you’ll feel like you are in a total different country….amazing I never going to forget that I ate wild pig with green fried bananas (tacacho) and yellow rice wrapped on bananas leaves it was yummy.

I have been lucky and I had the chance to travel around the world and Peru is one of those places that you always want to come back; that country has that special magnetism like Italy crazy traffic and friendly people Austria and Germany with buildings full of character cities in Europe too could use a good pressure cleaning but them their own personality will be wipe out. I have never felt unsafe I had traveled in charter buses and they security was great. Bars restaurants nightclubs people museums art galleries theatres etc. you can find great and inexpensive places. Take a taxi as you could do in London or N.Y and a lot of those taxi drivers can give you an earful of their culture in each ride.

There is poverty everywhere in the world and nobody told me that Peru was a Singapore. “Come out from under your sheets and see the world” that is a good one. If you want an adventure go to Lima if not take a cruise.
