I stopped in Lima last November on my way to Cusco and Machu Picchu. I spent four glorious days in Miraflores and the surrounding area. My wife and I walked the streets to Huaca Pucclana at late hours to eat nightly. I ate at local restaurants daily. I visited all of the neighborhoods, including Callao and Barranco. Everyone was friendly and helpful. My hotel, Casa Andina, was located along the craft markets row on Petit Thouars Avenue and within walking to damned near everything you could ever want. True, there is no set public transit, but when you can take a taxi from one side of the city to the other for a total of $4, who needs a bus system. True there is poverty, but there is poverty everywhere in the world. The people of Peru are lovely, the food is wonderful and very affordable, and the museums and such are wonderful as well. Come out from under your sheets and see the world.
