Before the 1973 revolution (I happened to there at the time) Lisbon was one of the world's most beautiful, cleanest, and safest cities. There was no crime or unemploymet. In fact Portugal was the only country in the world, at that time, that could make such a boast. It was truly a meca for all maners of tourism, featuring comfortable hotels and some of the best sea food on the planet. It was a great disappointment upon returning to Lisbon a few years later to find dirt and trash everywhere, traffic rivaling Rome and Paris, and to learn that personal safety had become a serious concern. The beauty is still there...if you don't look where you are standing...the sea food is still an experience to remember, and the Portugese people in general are friendly and very likeable. The traditional late dinner and Fado music is very much alive and well.
