1.Lyon, standing brightly in the shadow of Paris

Lyon is the second largest city in France behind Paris of course. That said it is not only different but better in many ways. Less crowds, more varity (relatively) and the center of gastonomy in a country that leads the world in it. Stay in Vieux Lyon and walk it. Be sure to visit the Gallo Roam ruins on the hill near Fouviere, the finicular is a fun ride up. Enjoy the many, many good restaurants and also realize that some of the best meals are had at lunch from a value standpoint. You might pay 15-20 Euros for a good 3-4 course menu but that same meal will cost you 25-35 for dinner. Enjoy the beaujolais too, a very much under appreciated wine that is certainly one of the best everyday drinking reds. Low cost too.
