This was our last stop while traveling overland from Ecuador to Peru. We were traveling cheaply and probably paid less that $20 for our hotel room. There were probably better more expensive places but not within our Peace Corps mind set. We ate at a restaurant on the coast just a short taxi ride from town. The food was good but the open air restaurant had a constant whiff of raw sewage. Ecuador and Peru at the time were technically at war so we had to navigate two kilometers of no-mans land between the two countries. We hired a man and boy to guide us through and made it through what was a large black market between the two countries. At one points venders had so moved in on the road that we could barely squeez through the crowd. We were happy and lucky to make it through with all of our possession. However we had to look forward to coming back.Machala is a Ecuadorian border town without many ammenities and a high risk if malaria.
