My family and I stayed at the Violet Residence condo's in July 2009. We had reviously viewed the condo's model the summer before and were very impressed. Well, talk about bait and switch. We decided before purchasing one of the condo's we should try it out first. Best decision we eveer made. The condo that was available for us to rent had bargain basement furniture - stuff you would buy at a garage sale 20 years ago - *I believe the towels were that old too. The condo was supposed to be able to accomodate 8 adulst plus children - we had 4 - total of 12 people. There were four bedrooms - in one bedroom were was a 3/4 size futon, one had an antiuated full bed, one had a queen-size bed with furniture that was from the 70's with mirrors and the whole shabang, and another full size bed in the last bedroom. We had 4 dining room chairs, 7 dinner plates, very sparse cooking utensils - the pots had flaking off teflon - not very healthy so we couldn't use them. All this for 12 people to sleep and eat - HA, HA, HA - what a joke. The swivel bases on the chairs in the living room were falling off so we had to fix them, the air conditioning (yes it was very hot when we were there and it was needed) did not work except for one unit - (they were only in the upper floor bedrooms) - my son-in-law spent two hours fixing them - they were turned ff on the inside of the actual unit - but when he got them working the air coming out of them wasn't very cool so they probably needed to be charged with freon (not done during our stay) so they were kind of useless. Needless to say we were VERY dissatisfied with what we paid for (which was PLENTY). When we called the agent to complain - he hung up on us and then sent his assistant to deal with the problems. We were already unpacked and ready to start our vacation so we decided to tough it out and make the best of it. Mackinac Island is a great place to visit, just DON'T stay at the Violet Residence.

Most comments here are about the Grand Hotel. Yes it is beautiful. However there are tons of different places to stay. Other hotels Inns B&Bs condos etc. I have stayed at several different locations and most are great! But the best is the island itself. It is magical. The atmosphere is enchanting. Locals are so very friendly and nice. Bike riding walking hiking site-seeing and horseback riding! The island experience is lovely!... More

My husband son & myself took a drive up north this summer. Our last stop was at Mackinac Island. It was outstanding. From the ride over in the hydro boat -- to the carriage ride around the island the entire day was a special treat! The main street is quaint with lots of little shops to purchase a trinket or two to take home to remind us of our trip -- as well as lots of places to buy the best fudge in the world. The main street is quaint with lots of little shops to purchase a trinket or two to take home to remind us of our trip -- as well as lots of places to buy the best fudge in the world. My favorite part was going out to the Arch a natural wonder -- a rock that has been formed over the years from the wind & rain wearing it through & forming it into a treat to behold. Our family would highly recommend a day or two at Mackinac. As a matter of fact it was my son's favorite part of the week's vacation & that is saying a LOT considering he is 14 years old : ) Try the place I think you'll enjoy it too!!!

I am a truck driver. I had the "Extreme Misfortune" of pulling a load of appliances and furnishings for a developer from Oakland Ca. to Mackinac Isl. in '06. I have been to every city and town worth mentioning and quite a few not worth the breath Mackinac Island didn't even make the "not worth the breath" list from what I had heard. I was leaving San Francisco and heading up to that "B.F.E." and I was not happy at all. I have been to every city and town worth mentioning and quite a few not worth the breath Mackinac Island didn't even make the "not worth the breath" list from what I had heard. I thank God I was misinformed. He made me go there and it was one of the best and most enjoyable tortures I have ever endured. I was stuck there two days before I could get unloaded this normally would have sent me into a screaming fit and I loved every minute. There is a lot to do and see but the best sight is the people. The tourists are still tourists wearing Dallas Cowboys shirts or Yankees hats and driving cars with Red Sox stickers or Ca. plates. The locals will be the thing that shocks you. I was there on business and everyone I met from the diner to a bar to a few shops and a gas station treated me like gold. They were equally good with the tourists. My point is truck drivers are usually treated like an intrusion because we are not a bus or van load of money-spending trippers. We only occupy space and time. Everyone in that town was among the nicest and most honest and real people I have ever met. They were all "Good People". I was shocked to see Biscuits and Gravy on the menu at the diner. I think they had a great Pot Roast also. I had a ball for two days and I would tell everyone to go whenever they can just not February and enjoy it. It is more than worth it.
