One of the best places I ever lived.
I lived overseas for over 20 years in numerous cities on 4 continents. Loved them all, but by far, Madrid was my favorite. I lived there for 5 1/2 years and loved it. The people were very friendly and generous, the food and variety of it was great, eating 5 meals a day with the largest in the middle and the others all smaller is much healthier, the cultural aspects are plentiful from the Prado to the outdoor Sculpture Museum under an underpass on a main thoroughfare, a world class zoo, Plaza Mayor and Las Cuevas restaurant, the Tablaos (flamenco night clubs), nearby historical cities of Toledo, Avila and Segovia. The time design may take some getting use to for some (lunch at 2:00, dinner at 9:00 or 10:00). Retiro Park is a great place to just relax on a warm balmy day. Public transportaion is excellent and inexpensive. I nor members of my family were ever robbed, though there are a few locations (tourist oriented) that are targets for thieves. Certain "street wise" precautions can prevent mishaps (eg: if at an outside restaurant, put your bag strap around your chair leg.) Love to do return visits there.
