If given the opportunity to live anywhere in the world I would select Malibu. I love the energy smells flowers the beauty weather you name it and it's there. I just need a few million to settle in near Paradise Cove. I'm at retirement age almost and I don't see a billion dollars coming my way to make this move happen. Very sad. Life is good for some I guess.... More

I am now well into my retirement and am glad to be 170 miles up the coast from Malibu. I was born in Los Angeles as were my mother and grandfather. I spent much time in Malibu as a youngster especially since my grandfather had a small 80 acre ranch in the hills above. Life was much different in those days and I expected to build my home there. When the Korean war came along I enlisted in the Air Force and when I returned to Southern California 4 years later my Grandfather had sold the ranch and settled in Hollywood where he had lived for most of his adult life. At first I was disappointed with the turn of events but when I see what has happened in the hills I realize how lucky I was. Water was a serious problem for those who built there and the nearly annual fires were terrifying to them. Traffic congestion is another lilfe-shortening issue which residents of the area face. I still drive through Malibu when I have occasion to go to LAX for one reason or another Particularly wishing to avoid the 405. Occasionally I'll drive up Big Rock canyon to where the ranch was. It is interesting to see the homes of celebrities on a street named after my family but I am delighted to be out of the traffic and the hectic way of life which has overtaken the Los Angeles area. I am truly enjoying life on the Central California Coast where life goes by at a slower pace and where the people are more friendly and caring.

4.Smoggy as Hell!

Malibu has too much traffic and smog. There are the odd days of serene beauty where the Santa Ana winds have blown it offshore for all to see. Beautiful sunsets on Smoggy days though. If you have a nice restful time on the beach it all ends when you get back in your car and slug it through PCH back to wherever you came from.... More

As a lifetime resident I find it difficult to gather all the words to explain Malibu especially in this (and my) very abbreviating form -- but I can say that it is a gem. You have the casual lifestyle and access to the city if you want or need it the beaches and the mountains the rich famous and the working class the very engaging and sometimes not so engaging residents. You have the casual lifestyle and access to the city if you want or need it the beaches and the mountains the rich famous and the working class the very engaging and sometimes not so engaging residents. And I have to say the previous poster must have been to Malibu on a bad day (and there are not many).... with all the ocean influences smog really does not exist. Yup -- Traffic is really bad on warm summer holiday weekends. And the amount of litter on the beaches is very sad after wonderful beach weekends --but it does get cleaned up! So I don't even venture out on busy weekends. However the off peak times are so peaceful and exhilerating -- especially the coastal drive to Pt Mugu the mountain hikes and/or Bike rides in between. I have lived and traveled to many places around the world... this has always been the best place to come home to ... if one can allow yourself to experience beauty without critical judgement of the little things life would be so much better. As an example -- I even love it here when it is stormy with rains when there is fog and when it is hot.... that's life in the Bu!
