Plassey House is the main administrative centre of the University of Limerick, situated about 3km from the City and just off the Dublin Road (N7). This fine Victorian mansion overlooking the Shannon, also known as the White House, was built in 1863 on land once owned by Robert Clive. Clive acquired India for the British Empire at the Battle of Plassey in 1757. Today the building houses a magnificent collection of paintings. Amongst these are works by Walter Osborne, Nathaniel Hone, William Leech and Limerick's Thomas Ryan, a past President of the Royal Hibernian Academy. Also on display are water colours by Mildred Anne Butler of Kilkenny. A particularly interesting feature is the National Self Portrait Collection of works by contemporary Irish and foreign artists.
