I was afraid to even get out of my car to shop because of all the crime not just older people but it's an alarming number of JUVENILES who are ready to pounce on you for your hard earned money. I live in CA and thought I'd take a position there with it being the south looking for southern hospitality. WRONG and other people that worked for the company that lived there had the same experience/argument as I. My family and I couldn't WAIT to leave there and come back to CA. I have relatives in AR that live close to Memphis. When I fly to that area I'd rather fly into Little Rock than into Memphis. Will NEVER live there again!

After reading the reviews about crime I was very nervous about going to Memphis. We stayed at the Peabody Hotel and visited sites in the tourist section. We did not have a problem at all. but has problems and is scary in placesWe took a family trip to Memphis for the weekend since it is roughly a 7 hour drive from Dallas. The place was interesting but it does seem like a city stuck in the past. The city government seems to have low funding in the police department. but has problems and is scary in placesWe took a family trip to Memphis for the weekend since it is roughly a 7 hour drive from Dallas. The place was interesting but it does seem like a city stuck in the past. The city government seems to have low funding in the police department. We were there for the 4th of July and it was mass chaos on the streets with no cops in the city directing traffic anywhere. It was basically a mass parking lot downtown. Beale Street requires a 21 ID after 10 and this reroutes the youths (mostly black) to the streets of Downtown Memphis. Most of them were DTP erupting fireworks in front of the Peabody Hotel and other historic buildings and almost injuring many innocent tourists after hours. Thus the remaining cops are solely focused on Beale Street at night so take caution in the rest of the city at this time. The racism and divide seemed rampant right on the streets after the fireworks with the whites and blacks taunting each other right out of their cars. The city seems to be one of the hardest hit from the struggling economy. Visit Graceland and Beale Street (on a Sunday) for families only. Memphis is definitely a haven for cheap partying and drinking though. Tunica MS just south of the city is great for casinos and is bustling with late night entertainment.Other than that from what I saw Memphis is a city that needs to grow up and get out of the past. With the economy so poor the future looks bleak but it is a place that has great potential. I am not sure if Elvis would have even cared for the city if he were still alive. The large markets of Texas Georgia and the Carolinas had the same political racial and corrupt problems years ago but were able to fix and progress through many decades of reform. I am sure Memphis can emulate the same but it will take plenty of time and definitely a better economy considering how far of a hole they city has dug for itself already.

This page is absurd! You get people who give high ratings and then idiots who give low ratings. First and foremost I think it is a disgrace that people are calling the city racist. Perhaps the politicians in the area are but I have never had a problem with ANYONE in Memphis. Then you have people talking about crime. What big city doesn't have crime? If you are street smart you won't have a problem. If the suburbs were counted in statistics along with the city the crime rate would be one of the lowest in the country. As for things to do...there is plenty. Very much for a city it's size (comparatively). I live in NY (City) and always enjoy visiting. I am relocating to Memphis due to my job and know 5 NYers who moved down there and LOVE it. The people are VERY polite and hospitable. They will go out of their way to help you.As for living there... The cost of living is AMAZING. You get a great value for your money. Most people that give bad reviews are the same people that are scared of any major city. These are the people who live work and play all in the suburbs and never experience what the city has to offer. They think you enter the city limits and all of a sudden you're going to get shot and robbed. What a stupid mentality!!!! I can imagine the things these people think of NY. Being used to a lot of major cities I will say that I think Memphis is pretty clean and VERY hospitable for a city it's size. Definitely visit this city if you like good food good nightlife and meeting friendly people.PS - Just because there are police on Beale Street doesn't make it unsafe... City-dwellers should know that though.
