I was in Mexico for 2 weeks in July/August, travelled around in Metrobuses, Subway trains..and went to Zona ROsa at 1 AM. It is pretty safe. Police were conspicuous by their presence in all tourist areas. Of course, we need to maintain basic safety precautions.

As regrds taxis, take the ones with a Red stripe from the 'Sitio' and you don't have to bargain. They go by the meter. If you flag a taxi from the road you may have to bargain.

We did not try the infamous green taxis - It is better to avoid them, considering their past reputation. Avoid taking taxis from the hotels - they are a rip off. Ask the directions to a Sitio nearby, you can also find them on the Mexico city maps available on the net.

While visiting the Teothihuacan Pyramids, taking the bus from the Bus Station Northcosts 10 pesos. Bus station is huge, walk to gate # 8 ask for Pyramids Ruins. Once you reach the Pyramids, a lot of tourist guides will approach you. You do not need them. The Area is small you can get around without guides. Taking an organised tour is costly and they stop for more time in shops than the pyramids.

2.Mexico City "the beautiful"
Mexico as a whole has many, many beautiful things to visit & do, If only they could get rid of the thieves, you are not safe anywhere, on the street, in your car, In a cab or even in a restaurant, it is really a shame, the people of Mexico could be so much better off with the income from from more tourists if they only felt safe.... I have family in Mexico City and I have lived there for a few months. I can say that is was an unforgetable experience and I enjoyed the majority of my time there. There is so much to see and to enjoy when visiting. I will say that it can be dangerous if you do not watch out for yourself. My sister-in-law has lived there for thirty years and has been robbed around 16 times during her time there, but she would not want live anywhere else. ... More

I lived in Mexico City for ten months while I studied in the city. Of all places that I have been in my life, I felt that this was more home to me than any of them. Growing up in rural Kentucky, I wasn't really exposed to many immediate threats, outside of being bitten by a snake or something of that nature. I lived in Mexico City for ten months while I studied in the city. Of all places that I have been in my life, I felt that this was more home to me than any of them. Growing up in rural Kentucky, I wasn't really exposed to many immediate threats, outside of being bitten by a snake or something of that nature. Mexico City, as any other mega city, has it's good and bad. I was involved in an attempted robbery in Mexico City; however, before moving there, I lived in Philadelphia (city of brotherly love) and was in an attempted robbery there too where I had to have stitches. At times, I did take sitio's in Mexico City, but 99% of the time, I hailed a taxi. It takes a little know how as with any situation in life. You can't wear pearls and carry an expensive hand bag at night and expect not to be robbed in any major city in the world, unless you have a personal driver or your own car. Also..... it also kinda helps that when you visit a place, maybe you should know a little about the culture and be able to speak the language. Also, there is a misconception that when people see people there from the United States, they assume they have money; which combines with drastic variations in socio-economic classes in Mexico City, some may be willing to devalue what morals they have been raised and decide to steal from those they think have more. I miss DF! Can't wait to return again :-)

This is an amazing city to say the least! Yes, if you act like a tourist you will be treated as such. But don't let that get you down! I have been welcomed by so many neighbors and strangers with handshakes and blessings. It is a fast city that will surely run you over if you don't know what you're doing or where you're going.
