Barbados

Barbados, the easternmost Caribbean Island, has the advantage of being just outside of hurricane range, for the most part. Decidedly British and sophisticated, Barbados is a beautiful island, surrounded by white sandy beaches and azure water. The interior is still filled with acre upon acre of sugar cane, and the cane-growing season is an important part of the local culture.

Decidedly, it is a wonderful juxtaposition of two cultures; the natives and the tourists. While cosmopolitan travelers jet off to Barbados from the UK on the Concorde for a day at the races, the local residents can still be seen toiling over a sugar cane harvest and celebrating the yearly bounty at a festival called Crop Over.

Once a major mercantile center, rivaled only by some U.S. East Coast cities, Barbados is more important these days to the immediate Caribbean region than to the world at large. It is here that major government agencies are located for the region, and abroad. For example, the US Ambassador for the Eastern Caribbean makes his home here, and... more

My husband and I have been to Barbados 4 times and are going back in November. There is so much to do for such a small island, the people are super friendly, the diversity and quality of restaurants is amazing, swimming in gorgeous calm torquoise waters on the south and west coast is simply unparalleled. How could anyone resist? Best bet: take a lunchtime catamaran cruise to swim with the sea turtles, there are many of them but our favorite was Cool Runnings.... More

In Oct of 2005 we went to a timeshare (RCI Exchange) on the southern tip of the island. Well after 3 days at what is marketed as luxury (I'd rate it as "zero") we left after getting a reservation at Accra Beach Hotel.Lets start by saying the roads in this squalor pit are atrocious at best. From entering at customs to leaving we were treated at best indifferent and mostly down right rude. And we are white and always acted "please thank you etc".

The hotel which we paid full boat for was certainly nice but no way was it 4 star and the staff where jerks to the core. I have been to some of the rudest places on earth (Belgium France Seychelles) and this place takes the cake. When asked by the only kind person we met (the pool bartender at Accra) if we'd come back we said "not a chance in hell" The beaches are a joke (20 feet wide at Accra and most where the same) the roads crumbling the restaurants decrepit and the people rude and pushy. Go to the South Pacific or even Seychelles (prettiest place on the planet) but stay away from Tijuana in the Caribbean.
