I work in the Garment District in NYC and have been going to Milan twice a year for the past 10 years on business. I have seen the Duomo walked the Piazza attended La Scala all which were enjoyable. However that said I find the city congested cramped and rather dull. However that said I find the city congested cramped and rather dull. It's a banking city first and foremost and you are hard pressed to find the beautiful boulevards and green spaces of other European cities. Since I'm stuck there twice a year I'm usually taking Ryan Air ( out of Orio e Serio) to anywhere else on my free weekends. If you do go to Milan - two days is really all you need. In season head out of Milan and spend some time in the ancient town of Bergamo continue on to Lakes Iseo and Garda and finish up in Venice. All are along the A-4 and a straight shot from Milan. Be aware of the traffic. It is not unusual to be held up for 4 hours or more on the A-4 during rush hour in either direction.

Milano has a milky white quality to the air that perpetually hangs over the city in a sick hazy pall. It is basically an industrialized megalopolis occupying a valley that traps the smog over the city for days. Prices in Milano for just about anything are tres cher. For the first time visitor to Italy try to avoid Malpensa Airport at all costs and definitely avoid Alitalia at any cost. A better way to see Italy is to fly into Roma and then depart for Tuscany as soon as possible. Rent a local home... More

A better way to see Italy is to fly into Roma and then depart for Tuscany as soon as possible. Rent a local home in Tuscany thru The Parker Co where four people can find wonderful and even remarkable accommodations for as little as USD $250 pp per week.Rent a car in USA b4 u leave for Italy for the best rate. Get the car insurance! Find one of the beautiful mountain villages rent a house in it and day trip to other cities like Firenze Sienna Arrezzo Luca Pisa Monte Castelli Montepulciano Cortona Perugia Ovieto or travel around Lake Trasimeno. Many of these little Mountain villages will take your breath away. Stop in any one of them for lunch or dinner and drink the wine from the local vintner.Tuscany is friendly and formidable cultural and historical but never ever boring.

Wonderful friendly Italy is too large a country to see in one visit. A first timer would probably desire to see mid-country: Rome Florence Pisa and maybe Venic or the south: Amalfi Capri Naples (Pompei) and Sorrento. This being my fourth visit to Italy after doing the south mid-country and Sicily separately we decided to fly into Milan and concentrate on the region called Emilia Romagna which included the towns of Parma Modena Bolgna and Rimini and the independent country of San Marino. We rented... We rented a car in Milan and motored to Parma famous for its cheese and posciuto ham. Modena famous for Luciano Pavorotti neighboring Busetto for Toscanini and Rimini right on the Adriatic Sea famous for its miles and miles of beaches. I couldn't take advantage of the beaches being October but the weather was in the 70's. Outside of Rimini we visited San Marino and San Leo two high-up mountain communities with small winding streets and breathtaking vistas. After Rimini we turned in the car and took a three hour train ride back to Milan for three more days. The train service is efficient comfortable and modern; we booked first class just to get reserved seats. We spent the last three days in Milan one of the top fashion capitals of the world. You can get lost wandering in Milan and get an excellent meal lunch or dinner in any out of the way cafe` or restaurant. One paricular interesting street in Milan is Via Dante. It is a pedestrian street with outdoor cafe`s shops and street entertainment. And of course the Galleria in Milan the covered outdoor mall is teeming with restaurants shops and people.Unfortunately La Scala the most famous opera house in the world was closed as the season does not start for a few months.Italy has many historical cultural educational ande festive venues. It is a must visit for anyone who has not been there. And lastly Al Italia Airlines is one of the finest efficient air line of the world.

Milan is very urban and very smoggy with a lot of traffic. There are cars motorcycles and mopeds zipping everywhere just like the cliche about Italians driving around a rotary. That being said this city is well worth visiting just for the food shopping and hospitality. Milan is very urban and very smoggy with a lot of traffic. There are cars motorcycles and mopeds zipping everywhere just like the cliche about Italians driving around a rotary. That being said this city is well worth visiting just for the food shopping and hospitality. There are cleaner more picturesque places in Italy like the Alps or Lake Maggiore but I have been to those places and nobody has been as warm and as welcoming to this American traveller as the Milanese. Everybody I encountered was courteous and helpful from my hotel concierge to the waitresses in the restaurants to the pharmacist to the sales clerks at H & M. If you even TRY to speak Italian they will meet you more than halfway and you will all end up laughing about your communication gap over a bottle of wine. Thats right I said wine! Wine is cheaper in Milan than Coca-Cola! At any hole-in-the-wall dive restaurant you can purchase an outstanding superior quality bottle of local wine for $4-$10 tops. And speaking of those hole-in-the-wall dive restaurants there are bistros tucked down hidden alleys that are so tiny they seat only 10 customers. They all feature fresh (by fresh I mean caught or picked that morning) homemade dishes that are scrumptious and cheap cheap cheap! The seafood in Milan is unbelievably fresh. The pizza is so good you'll never be satisfied with another slice of American pizza. Milan is the fashion capital of Italy need I expound on the shopping? When I visited I was on a multi-country excursion but I reserved all my shopping for Milan. You can shop for anything there from cosmetics to children's clothes to high-end modern furniture to priceless antiques. The prices are reasonable and the variety of choices are endless. You can even shop from your hotel room! There are shops boutiques and salons everywhere most within walking distance of your hotel. My only regret was having to leave Milan especially without one of those chic model haircuts.
