I work in the Garment District in NYC and have been going to Milan twice a year for the past 10 years on business. I have seen the Duomo, walked the Piazza attended La Scala, all which were enjoyable. However, that said, I find the city congested, cramped and rather dull. It's a banking city first and foremost and you are hard pressed to find the beautiful boulevards and green spaces of other European cities. Since I'm stuck there twice a year, I'm usually taking Ryan Air ( out of Orio e Serio) to anywhere else on my free weekends. If you do go to Milan - two days is really all you need. In season head out of Milan and spend some time in the ancient town of Bergamo, continue on to Lakes Iseo and Garda and finish up in Venice. All are along the A-4 and a straight shot from Milan. Be aware of the traffic. It is not unusual to be held up for 4 hours or more on the A-4 during rush hour in either direction.
