Moorea at the time we visited was a serene uncrowded and quite friendly place. We stated at the Sofitel in a charming bumgalow. We were only a few yards from the ocean. It was easy to spot Americans as so many didn't use precautionary measures re: the sun. Even though it was their 'winter' the sun was quite strong without feeling it. I am a redhead and came back with the best tan of my life. I plan on going again!! Siiigh..... More

We left Los Angeles at midnight to arrive in Tahiti when the sun was rising. What a beautiful view from the sky! We were greeted promptly at the small open airport and whisked away to the Pearl Resort. The beach bungalow we reserved was upgraded to an overwater bungalow. Everyone was so friendly! The bungalow was wonderful and we watched a baby octopus right off the deck. The restaurant was very good as was the Polynesian show. Try one of the local restaurants. The food is excellent and reasonably priced. We made the short walk to town from the Pearl and discovered a great bakery. Chickens and roosters kept us company. At the grocery we purchased a bottle of rum made locally. Be careful it has a kick! The island is very safe and we had a great time exploring in a rented car. Stop at the roadside stands as they have wonderful homemade items. I found a beautiful pearl necklace and met the person who made it. The shark feeding and sting ray tour was great fun especially watching other's reactions. The water is crystal clear and just as green as you see in pictures. The day ended with a cookout on a small island. The tour guide was so funny and kept things moving along. He insisted that kissing a sting ray was good luck so we all complied. The sting rays feel like velvet and brush by you like a cat. You can't go to French Polynesia without purchasing a pearl. The jewelers are very helpful. Each evening we watched the sun set from out deck over the water. You won't find a more beautiful site. The island is lush and green with large mountains. The people make you feel welcome and seem to sing Bonjour. Things end pretty early in the evening. So you have time to sit back and appreciate the beauty of the island.
