I have visited this little village every August for the past 15 years.
There are no cars in Murren take the lift from Stechelberg. I always stay at the Hotel Alpina at the far north end of Murren. It's reasonably priced and very comfortable. Don't expect anything extravagant. It is a simple hotel in the Swiss tradition. Frau Taugwalder and her son are the owners and they make their guests feel welcome. I always ask for the view of the Eiger Monch and Jungfrau which is on the east side. Don't hesitate to have dinner in the small restaurant. The chef is the son and he is very good. I recommend the bratwurst with zwiebel sauce (onion). It's my favorite.
There are great hiking trails both easy and difficult. I prefer to hike up to Sonnenberg and then on to the Almendhubel to have lunch. If you hike this direction and leave from the center of the village the beginning of the hike is a bit strenuous. If you walk to the north end of the village and take the panoramaweg it is much easier. Ask at the hotel desk and they will give you directions. I recommend taking walking sticks with you. If you have never used them you will be amazed at how much easier it makes the hike. The view on this hike coming and going is spectacular. This side of the Lauterbrunnen Valley has more beautiful views than the other side.
I go to Switzerland in the second half of August because the tourist season is definitely winding down at this time. I love the feeling of being in a beautiful village and able to really soak it in without being surrounded by a lot of people. And also at this time of year all of the beautiful flowers are still in full bloom. And for me that is an important part of the experience.
Be sure to go on up to the Schilthorn during your stay.
I sent a friend of mine to Murren and Hotel Alpina on her first trip to Europe and she said it was the best part of her trip. She will definitely go back.
