When many people think of Nantucket they think of naughty limericks or the popular TV sitcom "Wings," but it's actually one of the best kept secrets in North America. Many celebrities have summer homes in this idyllic island off the coast of Massachusetts.
Nantucket is known as "the grey lady" because of its intense fogginess. Although many days in Nantucket are filled with sunshine, when fog comes, it can be difficult to see. Several ships have crashed on Nantucket's shores because of the fog.
Nantucket Hotels are often whimsical and romantic. The Wauwinet is a Historic European Inn by the sea located on the island of Nantucket. Its restaurant, Toppers, is one of the best in the entire state of Massachusetts by critics. If you have children, be sure they are over the age of 12 as the hotel has age restrictions. The Jared Coffin House is the former house and namesake of an important businessman in Nantucket and was built in 1845. It is the sister property of the White Elephant. Another popular Nantucket Hotel is the Nantucket Whaler, a former home of a sea captain, and aptly located near the Whaling Museum. Speaking of whales, Nantucket was one of the inspirations for the book Moby Dick. The Whaling Museum is a must see for anyone fascinated by nature.
