Niagara Falls is the self-proclaimed, "Honeymoon Capital of the World" but you don't have to be a newlywed to appreciate this vacation hotspot. It doesn't matter whether you're bringing the entire family or your partner for life, Niagara Falls is appealing to everyone. In addition to the famous Falls, there are also a number of attractions on both the Canadian side as well as the American side. Here's some information about Niagara Falls to help you plan your visit.
Heading into Niagara Falls, Canada
Niagara Falls flights are serviced by three airports. They include Buffalo-Niagara International, Toronto Pearson International and Niagara Falls International Airport. However, Niagara Falls International only accepts private or chartered flights.
For Americans heading into the Canadian side of the Falls, you will be required to display your passport after September 30, 2007. You may also be required to have additional documentation for your family, such as birth certificates for your children, in order to gain entrance into Canada and for re-entry into the United States. This is a requirement of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, which was put in place to secure America's border following 9/11.
What to See at Niagara Falls
Besides the Falls, there's plenty to see on each side of the river. Finding guides and tours in Niagara Falls is an easy thing to do. On the Canadian side, it's been turned into a virtual tourist heaven. The Clifton Hill Amusement Area is home to numerous attractions like "Ripley's Believe It of Not!" and a plethora of shopping opportunities and many other amusements. Keeping with the naturalistic feel of your visit, there are the Botanical Gardens, Butterfly Conservatory and the Bird Kingdom. The Skylon Tower offers an astounding view of the Falls from its world-class restaurant, 520 feet in the air!
The American side of the Falls in New York has its share of fantastic attractions as well. Visitors can enjoy the Cave of the Winds, the Carousel Museum and the Niagara Aerospace Museum. There's also the picturesque Niagara Falls State Park and for the adults, the Seneca Niagara Casino and the Niagara Wine Trail offer tantalizing temptations.
Where to Stay in Niagara Falls
The Canadian side of the Falls has some beautiful accommodations where a look out your window will provide an astonishing view of the Falls at any time. Some of the more popular Niagara Falls hotels are in Ontario, and include the Embassy Suites Niagara Falls, where the hotel is perfectly located only 100 yards away from the Falls and the Sheraton on the Falls Hotel, which includes its own on-site casino. The rooms at these hotels start around $112 and $96 per night, respectively.
The New York side of the Falls is home to equally ideal accommodations. The Howard Johnson Closest to the Falls places you only steps away from the Falls for only around $65 per night and Michael's Inn By the Falls offers comfortable rooms which start around $73 per night. Each of these hotels are close to the exciting Seneca Niagara Casino.
Where to Eat in Niagara Falls
In Niagara Falls, Ontario, there are a number of casual eateries where you can grab a quick bite, like Subway, McDonald's and Tim Horton's. There's also a nice selection of more refined restaurants like the Carpaccio Restaurant, the CopaCabana Brazilian Steak House and the Secret Garden Restaurant. Japanese cuisine is well represented on the Canadian side with Taki, Yukiguni and Suisha Gardens serving some delightful dishes.
On the New York side, enjoy the Italian fare at Fortuna's, the Japanese delights of Koi and the area's best pizza at LA Nova. With over 100 items on the menu, the selection is varied, delicious and inexpensive at the Misty Dog Grill.
It doesn't matter which side of Niagara Falls you plan on spending your vacation, the best part is that you can enjoy both sides during your stay! Take a ride on the Maid of the Mist, enjoy a dinner at the Skylon Tower then dive into a night at the casino. There simply isn't a better way to enjoy Niagara Falls!
