Being the rebels that we are; my husband and I decided to ignore the whole \freedom fries\ thing and go to France for our anniversary. We found everything to our liking in Nice even though our French is poor the people were friendly the water beautiful and the food was excellent.. I became a fan of sea bass and still enjoy it whenever I can. We stayed at the Hotel Negresco and felt like royalty. The beach has rocks not sand.... More

If you want all the urban excitement of a major city in a gorgeous setting (the French Riviera) Nice is the place to go. If you want all the urban excitement of a major city in a gorgeous setting (the French Riviera) Nice is the place to go. We spent a week in a bed and breakfast/villa in the hills above Nice and the views of Nice and the sea beyond were fantastic. We went into Nice on a number of occasions and the old town with its market (every morning) is definitely worth visiting - but be warned that the tour buses stop there and as a result everything is overpriced. Also there are many restaurants to choose from in the old town and around the harbor - the trick is finding one that is authentically local and not geared toward tourists. The owner of the villa we stayed in strongly recommended Le Marlin in the old Harbor but it was closed the night we went.Note that the beach is rocky not sand but is still quite scenic. We went to a few small beaches and my favorite was in Cap D'Ail. It was in a small cove and you had to climb down stairs built into a cliff to get to the beach. The water was calm clear and the beach very clean. There are also two restaurants but they were a little pricey. My favorite area was Villfranche-sur-Mer and we went there twice for Dinner at a restaurant called Cosmo right in the old harbor. It has outside seating overlooking the water and a chapel (St. Peter's)that was painted by Jean Cocteau. One exciting event that happened when we were there was that the Mistral (great wind that originates in Siberia and blows down the Rhone into Provence) blew for a couple days (I didn't know that it blew in the summer) and it got very windy in the hills. When it passed the views of the neighboring mountains were spectacularly clear. There are also some very fine museums in Nice including probably the best Chagall museum and a Matisse museum as well.

I recently spent about a week in Nice. At first I thought the city was a little like a New Jersey boardwalk setting but after a while I realized that it was actually a very nice city with very sophisticated people. We were there in the high season and despite warnings that the place would be overrun with people that was not the case. It was crowded yes but not too much. The people watching is incredible. So many stylish people and very relaxed. What's cool about this place is all the amazing restaurants in the \Old town\ area. You will find yourself eating next to locals and tourists alike. Everyone is in a great mood and the food is awesome. Prices are also not that bad. We actually rented an apartment for the week which ended up being a great deal. We could make breakfast in the mornings. The breakfasts in restaurants are probably the biggest ripoff and we saved about 40 euros a day by cooking food ourselves. The shopping was best in the old town area and the biggest surprise of all is that this is not a city overrun with Starbucks H&M KFC and Burger King.

don't miss NiceI have visited Nice many times and have always loved it. Maybe generally speaking the best thing about it is that it combines all the beach elements with the attractions and services of a big city but the city does not get in the way. Strongly recommend Les Pechuers in the old port for Bouabaisse. Recommend Le Safari in the old town for great bistro eating try the Banacuda. Walking along the Quai des Anglais is a real treat on a nice day as are visits to Cap Ferrat and Mont Boron. The airport is very close to the city and access is easy. All the rental car locations require a bit of a confusing bus ride from the terminal but it is very do-able. Be prepared to wait in a line in the terminal for your selected rental car company before you head out to the location where the cars are on the bus. This will be a slow process but hang in there you are in Nice now. If you enjoy museums than the Chagall and Matisse can not be beat. The Chagall will require a drive or somewhat lengthy cab ride but if you love this artist it is well worth it.
