Historic Beautiful Tiny Jewel of a City.Obidos once known as the Queen's Dowery is situated on a mountain top and is still surrounded by high stone walls. A high forbidding City Gate opens each morning and you must pass through just as one did in the eighteenth Century. Once inside however you are back in the 17th Century. Historic Beautiful Tiny Jewel of a City.Obidos once known as the Queen's Dowery is situated on a mountain top and is still surrounded by high stone walls. A high forbidding City Gate opens each morning and you must pass through just as one did in the eighteenth Century. Once inside however you are back in the 17th Century. The only reminders of contemporary times are the smart little boutiques which show very colorful sophisticated fashion. You can walk the perimeter of the city in half an hour. The architecture consists mostly of old low row houses built of gray stone with cobblestone streets. The back streets have been gentrified into shops galleries of fine art little wine and pastry shops coffee shops no American corporate anything as well as groceries for the people who are so lucky as to live in this gorgeous enchanted place. You can stop into one of the very small shops and order a shot or a bottle of a delicious and unique liqueur made from local cherries and which can only be found in Obidos although it is well known throughout Portugal even in Lisbon.
