diverse and friendly 
I went to school just across the river in Hull, Quebec.  I visited Ottawa frequently, primarily for shopping the wonderful market.  In addition, there is a rich cultural life and the level of education is very high.  Nightlife is across the river, however in Hull.  Public transportation via bus is very good and there is a great pedestrian area downtown.  The winters are bitter; all the canals freeze and become ice-skating rinks.  That can be fun if you are a winter sports lover.
