Park City, UT

not rated
The character of Park City has been greatly influenced by its location in the Wasatch Mountain Range giving the city a feeling isolation although the city is only 32 miles east of downtown Salt Lake City.
Although the city is now mostly a resort town known for its great skiing and other outdoor activities, its mining roots keeps the town from being too yuppified and maintains a friendly and down-to-earth feel. This binary phenomenon is also reflected in the Sundance Film Festival when celebrities come in droves to celebrate both accomplished filmmakers and relatively unknown talents.
Quite a small town, it is difficult to divide Park City itself into districts. Still, there are a few areas of town with distinct personalities.
Main Street
The Main Street area is the center of Park City. Its Victorian buildings and colorful storefronts make the area quaint and picturesque. The Egyptian Theatre Company is located here where many films for the Sundance Film Festival are screened. The nightlife of Park City is most vibrant on Main Street. Here you can get drinks from the Wasatch Brew Pub or any number of other bars and restaurants late into the night. Main Street is also the center for shopping and contains many art galleries and boutiques such as Mary Jane's and Bunya Bunya, among other independent stores.
Additionally, Main Street tends to be be where many of the cultural festivals are held. The Park Silly Sunday Market, the parades at July 4th Park City's Traditional Independence Day Celebration and the Miner's Day Parade and Celebration, and the Kimball Arts Festival all take place on Main Street.
Prospector Square
A much newer area of town than Main Street, Prospector Square is a planned business community and has a more formal feeling. The layout and buildings are less unique than in other parts of the city, but the grounds are well maintained. Numerous hotels are also located in and around this area.
Prospector Square is busier during the day due to its business emphasis. Still, there is a lively restaurant scene which includes Windy Ridge Cafe and Blind Dog.
Other Areas
The three main ski resorts, Canyons, Deer Valley Resort, and Park City Mountain Resort all are fabulous ski resorts in the winter and full of
festivals and summer activities in the summer. A lively and festive atmosphere is maintained year round.
Kimball Junction is north of the city, located near Utah Olympic Park and encompasses the Tanger Outlet Center. Along with outlets for many big clothing brands, this area is also filled with chain hotels and restaurants for a taste of the familiar.
There are numerous smaller cities surrounding Park City, although the Heber Valley, with Heber City and Midway are the biggest ones of note. Just south of Park City and with great golfing and skiing of their own as well as some cute shops and cafes, they provide an alternative to or a great short trip from Park City. With a slightly more "country" feel than its northern neighbor, Heber City hosts the Soldier Hollow Classic Sheepdog Championship & Country Festival and Heber City's Cowboy Poetry Gathering and Buckaroo Fair.
