Perugia is - for me - the greatest Italian town. It is basically a student's place, a town of culture and learning, with an important university for foreign students and schools galore. I studied there in the 80's and my fondest memories are from those days. Few people realize that, but Perugia is older than Rome. It is an Etruscan town, and the Etruscan civilization predates Roma by many centuries. Set on top os a hill, it has the most amazing views in Umbria. Being close to Asisi and Foligno and many other jewels of Umbria, it is very convenient to visit the whole region on daily short trips. Firenze is not too far away either, or Sienna. In Perugia you're right in the middle of it all. You will eat great food, meet nice, friendly people and be away from the turist hordes that plague other Italian cities anytime.
