To this day the American media's coverage of Haiti is focused almost exclusively on political turmoil and devasting poverty. While both are existing issues the media continues to negate the uniqueness beauty and humanity of Haitian people and their culture.I've just returned from a 6 week stay in Haiti and it was truly an amazing experience! The museums are packed with a wealth of information the restaurants provided heaping plates of the best Haitian cuisine and the clubs in Petionville were just what I need to unwind and get my goove on all at the same time. I attended a top-notch production at the REX Theater with a cast of professional dancers and musicians who gave a splendid performance.I had the pleasure of traveling to Jacmel a small coastal town south of Port-au-Prince to attend their Kanaval celebration. What a treat! Jacmelians are skilled and dynamic artists who produce wonderful pieces of art. It was great seeing everyone having a great time singing and dancing together. I can't forget about the beaches in Jacmel. Clean. Blue. Tranquil. You will have to go and experience it firsthand...Headed back to PAP for their annual Kanaval celebration which was a outta control!! (in a good way) This celebration goes on for three consecutive days for about 12 hours each day. You literally party until you drop. I had the pleasure of dancing with a folkloric group during the procession and I must say as a student of Haitian dance it was the highlight of my trip! Imagine singing and dancing with THOUSANDS of people while Kanaval favorites such as Sweet Mickey T-Vice Djakout Mizik Kreyol La Azor and RAM passed by on floats blessing us with their infectious rhythms and chants. Again it's something you have to experience to fully understand and appreciate. Where was the media then?I'm by no means saying that Haiti is perfect. It has many flaws. However I feel more folks need be open minded about traveling to the country.
