I lived there for two years and would not return unless my plane crashed on the island. It rains 220 days a year with 20 knot winds off the north Atlantic. On the plus side the country has the hisgest number of published poets and authors per capita in Europe. Fishing boats are often stocked with excellent libraries and the water and air are clean. There are few bugs and no reptiles. You can read a book outside at 2 in the morning in June and if you're not a morining person the sun doesn't real... More

If you are afraid of trees you'll have no panic attacks in iceland.

Mystical IcelandI wanted to do something special for my 40th birthday so my hubby & I went to Iceland. What a surreal country. Even though it was the end of October and I don't particularly like cold-weather vacations it was well worth it and I dream of the day I can return. I tell others Iceland was like Hawaii Alaska Ireland and the moon all in one! The Thingveslir (sp?) Park was incredible. It felt like no man's land (where the tectonic plates meet). I tell others Iceland was like Hawaii Alaska Ireland and the moon all in one! The Thingveslir (sp?) Park was incredible. It felt like no man's land (where the tectonic plates meet). I have fond memories of this country; the aurora borealis lights the ghostly sunrises at 9 am the blue lagoon we swam in the geyser we witnessed the glacier we walked on the waterfalls we walked under or canoed to and the erupting volcano while we tried to fly home through the ashes. The place had everything!

Having traveled to 22 different countries & 35 states I love to travel. It's great fun to meet local people experience a taste of their cultures thru art food dancing etc.I spent 18 months in Iceland while serving in the military. As polite & diplomatic as I could be (I even learned several icelandic phrases) Most every native in any country is complemented if a tourest makes an effort to learn even a little bit of their native language. i sadly didnt make a single friend in Iceland. Perhaps there was a lot of anti American military sentiment at the time. Part of Icelands participation in NATO is to host a NAto country's military on there island. The USA has been there for at least 40 years although the base may be closing soon - too expensive to run. Iceland doesnt have its own military). The food was very good - very expensive for an american. The night clubs are big & fun. People arive by taxi & are eligantly dressed. Do not drink & drive especially in Iceland. First offense is $10 thousand fine & possible jail time. That explains everyone drinking heavily but always taking a taxi. Dont take offense if someone bumps into you at a club & doesnt say excuse me. It's really not there custom. Bring a a swim suit and visit the Blue lagoon. Geo-thermal heat keeps it warm year round. If hiking always stay in a group. Don't venture far. Weather conditions can change rapidly from 65 degrees & sunny to a temp. drop to 35 degrees 20 knott winds & icy sleet within a few hours.
