Rio -- The Queen of all cities
I used to visit Rio regularly until a little over a year ago. You can hardly imagine how beautiful and full of life a city can be. The beaches, though crowded, are simply out of this world, and are safe to tourists. The government cares a lot about the tourist traffic as it brings a lot of money. So, if you stick around the tourist areas and don't venture out on your own to the other areas without a local person, you are very safe. That includes walking the streets at nights until no later than about 9 PM as long as you stick to the tourist areas. The Ipanema beach and the surrounding food joints are incomparable and you will feel sad leaving the country at the end of your stay. Most hotels are just good, though nothing extraordinary for someone who is spoiled staying in US hotels most of the time, - and I am talking about some of the more expensive hotels in Rio. In general people are very friendly and would be willing to strike up a conversation at restaurants provided you can speak Brazilian Portugese just a little. By the way, most people do not speak English, and you would be so much better off learning their language just a little before you go. Airport security staff are very strict but courteous when you leave, and please take that extra few minutes to go through your bags one more time, just in case you have put in something unpalatable to them during your long stay. Apart from the usual tourist places, visit the world famous Maracana Soccer Stadium and enjoy a game, if you are a soccer nut like me. Overall, a great city to visit with family.
