Watch surfers at Steamer Lane (by the lighthouse) it's the best part. You can walk or bike a few miles along West Cliff Drive. Broad sandy beach and Boardwalk amusement park. Whale watch trips from the wharf. Pacific Avenue has street musicians bookstores and sidewalk cafes. Go up highway 9 to redwoods. Monarch butterflies may be at Natural Bridges Park from October to February; flying if temp is over 55. Nearby Seymour Marine Discovery Center has blue whale skeleton and aquarium.... More

downtown Santa Cruz has great shops and lots of street entertainment and the boardwalk with the old fashioned roller coaster is lots of fun but the best thing about the area are the magnificent beaches--great for dipping your toes or surfing. Wind your way on Highway 9 through the redwoods and go antiquing in the little towns enroute or try one of the excellent local wineries. Stop at Ben Lommond Market in Ben Lommond or at Johnnie's or New Leaf in Boulder Creek to get a picnic lunch then head... More

Stop at Ben Lommond Market in Ben Lommond or at Johnnie's or New Leaf in Boulder Creek to get a picnic lunch then head for Big Basin State Park--it is fabulous. Or go to Felton and board the steam train for a ride thru the Big Trees.

3.Twin Lakes Beach and The Upper Crust Restaurant

A perfect stay in Santa Cruz for us always includes spending the day at Twin Lakes Beach by the marina followed by dinner at The Upper Crust Restaurant on Mission St. and ending the day at The Boardwalk. On Wed and Thu starting at 5:00 pm you get an unlimited ride wristband for $9.95. You can't beat that.

Beautiful 3 mile walking trail right on the coast overlooking the surfers beach. If you head out on the main pier there are cut outs on the pier that allow you to look down at the fat slob sea lions that camp out and sleep there. If you head down the coast another 10 miles or so to Capitola there is a charming meditteranian inspired motel that sits right on the beach that makes for beautiful pictures. Plenty of dining on the beach in Capitola and plenty of restaurants on Santa Cruz's pier. ... More
