1.Love Chile - North

Central Valley and SouthI found every area unique. The North is very dry with nice beaches and great history. Loved the vineyards and Pisco making - delicious. The Central Valley with Santiago - a beautiful modern city clean and safe. Great Restaurants elegant stores museums art galleries great skiing resorts although it was too warm (start of summer) to ski when I went. I found the people very friendly and well educated. Almost everyone spoke some English some very well some a little. It was easy to get by.. Great night life between jazz clubs pubs beautiful Municipal Theatre where they have concerts opera and ballet. At times it felt like I was in Europe. Vina Del Mar is a beautiful and fun city with Valparaiso next to it full of history and colonial appeal and the hills with the "funiculars" were amazing. Many restaurants discos pubs and night life in Vina del Mar. The South of Chile with its volcanos the ocean fjords and quaint villages is amazing. Outstanding fishing rafting canoeing (great fly fishing).
We just loved it there. We enjoyed eating empanadas pastel the choclo and the fantastic seafood. I loved congrio frito which I am not sure what fish it is but it was delicious and I ordered it whenever I could. The pastries are also very good.
I met many people of German Yugoslavia British and Spanish ancestry.
I spent two fantastic weeks. I will be going back again. Made some good friends in a short period of time.

Santiago gets none. While I generally liked Chile I did not like Santiago. It was an unattractive city and most neighborhoods seemed to be very seedy. I work for an airline and travel the world and Santiago is one of the few cities I would not like to revisit. On the other hand Puerto Montt (about a two hour flight south of Santiago) is a gem and seems to be off the beaten tourist track. From there we rented a car and took the ferry to Chiloe island. It was the highlight of the trip and something I'll always remember. The Chilean people are great but if you're travelling independently you'd better know at least a little Spanish.

Spend your first 2 nights and last night in Santiago. Taxi's are inexpensive and available at all hotels and English speaking drivers are available. Flights arrive in Satiago from 7 to 9 AM as they are almost all red eyes (perfect for an 8 hour overnight flight). Drop things at hotel and get in town and start to look around. Day 2 plan a tour (use the hotel info) and see more of the city/museums/vineyards/etc. Day 3 rent a car and drive to VinaDelMar / Val Parisa (side by side cities) its... More

Day 2 plan a tour (use the hotel info) and see more of the city/museums/vineyards/etc. Day 3 rent a car and drive to VinaDelMar / Val Parisa (side by side cities) its interstate the whole way and fairly easy to find your way ..One is the beach/casino's and the other is a major port. Both are very interesting and lots to see. Spend 3 days up there then back to Santiago. Some of the local hotels are not as fancy but very comfortable friendly and much less expensive. Flights leave Santiago at night so your last day pack up check you bags and relax doing whatever and leave for the airport around 5-6 pm for the red eye flight home... An incredible place with awesome food sites and friendly people. There are tours to the vineyards available all over town. Be sure to go to Concha Torra which is the oldest and most beautiful vineyards of all. From Downtown Santiago (Providencia area is best) the vineyard is not more than 45 minutes...really less. The InterContential hotel is in a very safe walking area/lots of resturants/very safe. The Marriott is very nice but not the place to be walking as its surrounded by major roads. I do not recommended staying downtown as businesses close early and the town gets empty. Its an awesome daytime visit downtown.Remember they are the opposite of the U.S. weather wise. Jan and Feb in Chile are July and Aug for us. So if you want to be in the heat of things...its Jan/Feb (and the most expensive time of year)
