Savannah is one of the country's top ten cities for walking tours, and is home to more than 1,000 restored historic buildings. There are many free things to do in the city, including walking through the historic district, the Telfair Museum of Art, and visiting the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

The downtown heart of Savannah is called the Historic District. Georgia's founder, General James Oglethorpe, planned the city to be laid out in a perfect grid. This district contains 21 cobblestone squares that were the original city. There are several excellent Savannah hotels and bed-and-breakfasts to choose from.

The Hilton Savannah Desoto is one of the many Savannah hotels that is renowned for its traditional Southern hospitality for over a century. The civic center, City Market, Vision Center, and River Street are all within walking distance. The Savannah International Airport is a short distance of 14 miles away.

The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort is located just across the river from the Historic District. It is a 90-second ferry ride to the downtown district. Its PGA golf course hosts the PGA Tour, Champions Tour, and the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf Tournament.

If you are looking for a quaint and intimate experience, a bed-and-breakfast might be a good choice for you. The Gastonian Inn is a four-diamond, award-winning bed-and-breakfast. The two mansions that house the Gastonian were built in 1868 and Conde Nast Magazine says its one of the finest places to stay in the world.

Another bed-and-breakfast, the Bellastone Inn, was called the "best place to stay in Savannah" by the Frommer's handbook in 2005. The locals consider the Bellastone Inn the most romantic of Savannah hotels.

The charming Foley House Inn is a AAA four-diamond inn. National Geographic Traveler named this inn as one of the top 25 bed-and-breakfasts in the South. The slow pace, Southern hospitality, and its location between two historic churches lend to the charm of this mansion-turned-hotel.
