Shanghai is China's capital of commerce, industry, and finance and is home to the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, one of the tallest towers in Asia.

Shanghai contains many districts with their own individual style and the Shanghai hotels have their own individual style too. The Huangpo downtown district contains many chain hotels, but the area shuts down around 10 pm. If you're looking for nightlife, stay in the Luwan District, with its emphasis on Art Deco architecture. Colonial mansions populate the Jing An District in Northwest Shanghai.

Shanghai hotels are either sino-foreign joint venture hotels, where the property is Chinese-owned but the management is foreign, or Chinese owned and managed hotels. Shanghai features some of the most luxurious international chain hotels along with backpacker hostels and hovels. Budget Shanghai hotels are rare, though moderately-priced accommodations are plentiful. Discounts can be found, especially from December to February. Rates tend to be highest from May to October.

Pudong Shangri-La Hotel , located along the Huangpu River, features views of the Bund. The hotel offers a Himalayan-themed spa and a health club and pool.

Hengshan Hotel features a mix of Art Deco, European-inspired, and 1930s decor. This affordable hotel is located in the French Concession district.

The whimsical Hengshan Moller Villa is housed in the former headquarters of the Chinese Communist Youth League. This boutique hotel is full of architectural gems, like unusual brickwork and land turrets.

Shanghai Peace Hotel is a historic Art Deco hotel. The hotel was featured in Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun and is the place where Noel Coward wrote his novel Private Lies in 1930.

Rooms at the hip, trendy JIA Shanghai Hotel is located in the heart of Shanghai, are individually-designed and come complete with kitchenettes. The hotel is low key and anything but formulaic. This hotel is local to major stores for shopping such as Citic Plaza, Isetan, and Plaza 66. The Shanghai Museum and People Square are each a short taxi ride.
