The Angkor Wat Temple complex adjacent to Siem Reap is so interesting I had to take it all in twice in 2005. I suggest that you visit the Temples either early in the morning because it can get quite hot there. Taking pictures of the Angkor Wat Temple at sunrise is the best. The scale of the temples and the bas relief construction is breathtaking. My favorite was Ta Prohm with is where \Laura Croft the Tomb Raider\ was filmed. The scale of the temples and the bas relief construction is breathtaking. My favorite was Ta Prohm with is where \Laura Croft the Tomb Raider\ was filmed. Most of Ta Prohm is in its original \ruin\ condition. You need to hire a car to get out to Ta Prohm. Take in the central market in Siem Reap for good deals in Khemer artwork. The Khemer food at The Red Piano restaurant is also very good. Khemer food is spicy but with Angkor Beer its great. While in Siem Reap take a taxi out to Lake Tonle Sap and hire a boat tour of the lake. There are some floating restaurants on the lake and lots of fisherman families (mostly Vietnamese) that live full time on houseboats on the lake. If you want to go to Phnom Penh from Siem Reap try the hydrofoil from Tonle Sap that connects to the Mekong River.. but don't do it when the lake is low as the boat often bottoms out.

Cambodia is a rare place full of kind people who are truly grateful to have tourists. My sister & I just got back last week June 1st from Raffles Grand Hotel Siem Reap and upon our arrival we were treated like royalty which was a mixed blessing as the local population is still recovering from the atrocities of war and hunger. The hotel staff is helpful but not intrusive the food was fresh and delicious and the spa and pool were like a slice of paradise. Our Guide to the temples Mr. Ve was knowledgeable thoughtful and had such insight as to the history of the temples as well as Cambodia today. Use a guide and tip them well! The average yearly income is around $1300 US not much and our money goes a long way but please be generous and don't look to bargain to save what amounts to a quarter! You can use US currency it is accepted widely. Take lots of new crisp $1 & $5 dollar bills to give to the children at the entrance and exits of the temples. They don't beg they have goods for sale. Keep in mind that they don't go to school and work from childhood onward. I believe that in the near future the temples will be less accessible but today you can walk through and touch what I think are world treasures. The beauty is unparalleled more than any other historical site I have ever visited. Take precautions and get you deet at least 50% and dress with respect for the religious sites. Please wear long sleeves and cover up. This is not only for the respect shown but to keep the mosquitoes off. The heat is wet and the sun is hot but if you pace yourself you can see quite a lot in a couple of days. My only regret is that I wish I had more time on this trip. I will be back next year though I fear there will be many more people then. Good for Cambodia but maybe less so for those that have been able to experience this place now with its peaceful serene and gentle qualities.

Yes it was hot dusty the people we saw very poor the children heart-breaking and the people selling things outside the temples a nuisance. All that said I would urge everyone who is reasonably healthy to go before the area becomes overrun with tourists. We were able to climb to the tops of temples wander around the ruins and enjoy them in a way that will probably not be possible as more people visit. We stayed at the Sofitel which was wonderful and I am sure that most other accommodates are also great. We have no experience with the lower budget hotels in Cambodia so I would strongly recommend a good travel agent and a tour guide. Each time we came around a corner or visited a new temple our jaws literally dropped and we stopped in our tracks to take it all in. Don't hesitate....GO.And take plenty of US dollar bills so you can buy all the great things the kids sell.

Absolutely wonderful. The views and sites and sights are something to see now because in a few years one will not be able to get as close to the various temples as you can now. The tourist business is booming and that will take its toll on the initmacy of visiting the temples and grounds much like it has at the Acropolis and parts of Easter Island (since we were there in 1981). Raffles is the classic hotel and our guide \Tim\ from there was superb both in English and in knowledge. I understand there are far less expensive yet clean hotels available too. Plan early morning and late afternoon. Come back for lunch and shopping or a swim. The bugs were non-existant in November but the crowds at certain times make up for them. I think when we go again it will be during the rainy season and fewer people. I can't imagine the rain would affect touring that much. We had the Kyber dinner at the I think Meridian Hotel in town... it was OK but really not all that interesting... of course where else can you have that? Don't miss the arts and crafts school/shop. Beautiful items and some seem a little pricey but not really and especially once you get them home. Lunch/dinner outside of the hotel can be very good and inexpensive. Raffles has a marvelous though of course touristy buffet and show... quite splashy and interesting with the native dancers and costumes. Good value.but reserve early for a table close up to the stage and in range of the fans. Be sure to bargin in the shops and stalls. Heavy barganing can get some nice deals (at least we thought they were and that's all that matters.) Lots of fun small silver things beautiful woven table cloths and scarves and tons of look-alike stuff in each booth. But for true quality you have to shop carefully and also at the craft/school. You'll love it. We are inclined to rent an apartment there sometime for about two months but that would be max! Easy flights from Bangkok to Siem Reep
