Go south of Sienna to the town of Costafabbri home of one of the areas great restaurants - Osteria il Cantuccio. The food is great and quantities are large. The chef/owner Nilo aims to please and does not miss a beat! Spending a week at a farmhouse in Tuscany we visited the restauarnt three nights. Every time was more wonderful than the previous. Ask him to surprise you with dinner. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Definitely a five star place!!!!... More

If you like history Siena is the place to find it and while I suggest you get a guide fluent in english it's a great place to walk and learn. October is the perfect month to visit for weather and unfettered site seeing. A hospital town during the war saved the city from distruction leaving medieval buildings and the exterior of the plot plan for the church which was to have been larger than Saint Peters in Rome but stopped when the plague devestated the population. ... We traveled through Tuscany this past June and one of our biggest learnings was...don't bother with Siena! Tuscany offers a multitude of other far more intriguing smaller towns. Sienna's enormous square lacks the architectural interest that other towns offer. We also found it far more difficult to converse with shop owners there...perhaps the overabundance of tourists has made them jaded. We also found it far more difficult to converse with shop owners there...perhaps the overabundance of tourists has made them jaded. Instead. we suggest you spend your time visiting San Gimignano Pienza Montepulciano Volterra and tiny Monteriggioni. Each town has some similarities (e.g. gelato shops) and unique specialties. And the views will leave you wondering...how did the artists find canvases that big.?..they are so perfect they don't seem real. Enjoy!
