If you like history Siena is the place to find it and while I suggest you get a guide fluent in english it's a great place to walk and learn.  October is the perfect month to visit for weather and unfettered site seeing. A hospital town during the war saved the city from distruction leaving medieval buildings and the exterior of the plot plan for the church which was to have been larger than Saint Peters in Rome but stopped when the plague devestated the population.
