We traveled through Tuscany this past June and one of our biggest learnings was...don't bother with Siena! Tuscany offers a multitude of other far more intriguing smaller towns. Sienna's enormous square lacks the architectural interest that other towns offer. We also found it far more difficult to converse with shop owners there...perhaps the overabundance of tourists has made them jaded. Instead. we suggest you spend your time visiting San Gimignano, Pienza, Montepulciano, Volterra, and tiny Monteriggioni. Each town has some similarities (e.g. gelato shops) and unique specialties. And the views will leave you wondering...how did the artists find canvases that big.?..they are so perfect they don't seem real. Enjoy!
