St Louis is my hometown even though I moved away many years ago. I absolutely love the people. I love everything about this city except the humidity in the summer. I have lived and visited many other cities and nothing compares to my feelings for this town. I love it love it love it.... More

MOSt. Louis is a good place to be from. I was born there and couldn't wait to get out! All my life living in St. Louis I knew there was a better place to live...Better people Better mind set better food better EVERYTHING! I know reside in Northern Cal and would not move back to StL even if my life depended on it. You are correct when you say the people are open arms and very welcoming but the progress mentally financially and socially falls so far behind that when I speak with other StL people today they appear ignorate and uninformed about the world and how to move forward. And I am sure that I appear arrogant and snobish because I can only relate to my life now not what I grew up with. I expected people that I grew up with to progress along with me but No they appear to be happy living check to check with no desire to see the rest of the world or try to figure out a way to make their lives better.DT St. L is quite the ghost town now. It was run down by the local ghettos that were very near. The politics and racist mind set of the whites or should I just say non-blacks is part of the problem. I am a black female and I when I revisit my home town I get stares from mainly whites because I appear to be confident wellspoken and well groomed. A large majority of blacks appear angry (and rightly so) lacks education and contend with a high school diploma or an Assoc. degree at BAC and with working at a fast food restaurant at 40 or Walmart. A management job at any company is near impossible for blacks there. I feel very guilty when I return home to visit relatives. They call it middle class guilt. A final observation is that many people who are underachievers LOVE St. L because you can live comfortably on $25K per year. In N Cal. you have to earn at least $250K-$500K just to live comfortably and afford a house in a decent area. People who are wealthy in StL would have a difficult time staying a float here in North. Cal.

I never knew about the Soulard Mardi Grau(? spelling) until recently. I do miss the Veiled Prophet Parades tho. We lived in several parts of the city but went to church at Central Assembly of God on Victor near 12th street. That's where we married in 1958. I attended Humbolt Lafayette Mason Roe South West High & McKinnley High schools.
