Sydney is Excellent 
Think of New York but cleaner, warmer, more accessible with a good exchange rate.   Shopping, eating, partying, gambling, museums, sports, concerts etc.  Don't forget the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge where you can walk on top of it!  The Rocks is also a nice place to spend a day.  Darling Harbour is a must.  Close by is Bondi Beach (although its no Jones Beach). Spent 7 months there and would go back in a heartbeat.
