I believe Libya is a very precious place and should be seen as is not commercially. I lived there in 1969 and truly loved it and its people I wish I could of seen the ruins and the land scape but too much turmoil in those days. I would love to go back again.... More

1958 and 1959 were great years for me and the family. Livinging in downtown tripoli I needed a 24/7 guard around my house. My children were 8mo3 4 and 5 yrs old. The arabs were pretty decent to us the visits to the desert were just great especially the old roman ruins. Swimming in the Med was really wonderful water so nice and blue and so clear. King Idris was the ruler at the time and and in 1958 near the Kings Palace they put in the first set of street lights (intersection of 24th & December streets) hours on end the arabs stood in awe watching the lights change color very humorous. Thursday arabs would block the road with camels and bargaining all day long swapping a piece of metal for a rag or something days end whatever you ended up with was what you took home. Trying to get to work that day was something else as camels would be in your way and spitting at the car. GIs were told when arriving at Wheelus AFB if you hit an arab at night or have a flat tire just continue home and report the incident after. Contrary to what you might read the arabs were nice to you daytime and around people but you could not trust them in the evening. The average income in 1958 for an arar there was 25 dollars per year so you can see what they could take from an american if they jumped them. But overall it was a very nice experience and I was glad to leave with the family and finish my tour in Germany and then back to the states. Nothing like home sweet home believe me.
